This is the final story C.L. Moore wrote about her character Northwest Smith, a Han Solo-style interplanetary hero.

I just read my way through the entire Northwest Smith series, via SF Gateway's C.L. Moore Omnibus, so I spotted that this story was an expansion of a hint we were given in the story "Julhi" that Smith had a tragic past involving a lady.

I'm not sure how well it works as a solo short story, but I felt it was an enjoyable vignette.
